2008 Conference and AGM


The Annual General Meeting of the Cumbria NWA was held on 04 October 2008 at the Newton Rigg Campus of the University of Cumbria. Over 80 members were present. Dr John Perkins was elected as Chair and Mrs Judith Derbyshire as Vice Chair.

The Chief Constable addressed the meeting and stressed his support for NW and its Association. He recorded his thanks for their help in seeing a continuing reduction in recorded crime within Cumbria. The High Sheriff of Cumbria, Graham Lamont presented the High Sheriff’s Shield to the BAT (training the vulnerable to protect themselves against bogus callers) team and a special certificate of appreciation to Phil Harkness who has been involved in active community work for almost 40 years.

Judi Evans the Director of Operations for the North East and Cumbria gave a presentation stressing the need for partnership and collaboration between third sector organisations and reported on a successful pilot whereby NW volunteers in two isolated communities had been trained, free of charge, in basic first aid training.

The meeting concluded with a presentation from David Farmer who has been appointed as a special project manager by Cumbria County Council to develop a business plan for NW and the CNWA. He presented his outline ideas to the meeting envisaging more distinct roles, responsibilities and reporting arrangements for NW and its Association so as to ensure NW in Cumbria continues to develop as a thriving and sustainable third sector organisation.
