Neighbourhood Watch Volunteers - Making a Difference

The Carlisle Voluntary Service held a series of events to celebrate National Volunteer Week throughout the 1st – 7th June 2007. A number of our Neighbourhood Watch volunteers attended the “Recognising Volunteers Celebration” at Carlisle Rugby Club on 6th June.

Paul Caine, Neighbourhood Watch Development Officer for North Cumbria and Eden, said "It was a great night when everyone was able to let their hair down and meet volunteers from other organisations. However, we have thousands of volunteers so I would like thank everyone for helping Neighbourhood Watch to make a difference, by Putting the Unity in Community”.

Alleygates

This Alleygates project was funded by the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership and cost approximately £18.333

This Streetsafe was arranged to link into the launch of the new Alleygates Scheme. Carlisle City Council have introduced the scheme in partnership with Cumbria Police and other partners to help reduce anti-social behaviour and crime by reducing unauthorised access by people to back lanes and alley ways e.g. using motorbikes or mini mottos to ride illegally through the lanes.

Open & Shut Case

Only residents will be granted access to the lanes. It is anticipated that Alleygates will be rolled out to a number of other areas in Carlisle. For further information contact: Steven O’Keeffe, Community Safety Officer - Carlisle City Council on 01228 817011

This Streetsafe was held at Bassenthwaite and Crummock Street on 22nd June 2007. The multi agency team consisted of twenty people including Neighbourhood Watch volunteers, Police and Fire Service

L to R: Rachael Little, PCSO, and Maureen Connor, Neighbourhood Watch Volunteer on Crummock Street, Carlisle, engaging residents as part of a door to door outreach to find out how people feel about crime and community safety issues in their area.
